Easy Ways to Treat Your Feet Right

Foot care has been in the news recently, with the focus on diabetes bringing healthy feet to the top of the agenda. So are your feet healthy?

Diabetes suffers above all will know that looking after feet is essential. Diabetes patients can quickly lose sensation in their feet with never damage and blocked capillaries, adding an extra health risk as infections could go unnoticed.

And we need to learn from diabetics and their generally excellent approach to foot care. We put so much strain on our feet that the slightest discomfort can have a knock-on effect on routine activities such as walking or climbing the stairs. Any infection that starts in the foot can spread to the rest of the body.

How to look after your feet

  •     Check regularly for cuts and bruises you may not notice them when they happen, but if you don't treat them, you may need antibiotics to recover from the after-effects
  •     Dry your feet properly after having a shower. By wearing socks with wet feet, you can cause fungal infections such as Athletes Foot.
  •     Change your socks every day. Well some people forget! Wearing the same socks just two consecutive days can lead to infections. Just don't do it!

How to seek assistance

In the US, you see a podiatrist. In the UK, you see a chiropodist. The truth is, they are one and the same thing, and even in the UK, the word podiatrist is becoming increasingly popular.

Chiropractors diagnose, treat and prevent disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of the disorders on a persons general health. Podiatrists specifically look after the feet, and with 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 ligaments, there's plenty to look after.

So instead of spending extra on skincare or hair care this month, why not invest some time in looking after your feet. You're always on them, and they're always there to support you!
